When emergencies strike, it’s important to have the right team on your side, and the same is true of dental emergencies. It can be overwhelming to experience constant pain and scary if your tooth is broken or knocked out.
At Stanford Dental, we’re here for our emergency patients. When necessary, we will try to get you in as soon as possible to be seen, and Dr. Carron can often provide same-day care. We also welcome new patients who are experiencing emergencies, so even if you’ve never been to our practice before, we encourage you to call us right away if you need help.
Meanwhile, here are some helpful tips on handling common dental emergencies until you can get to our office.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Your first reaction in an emergency situation is probably to panic; however, remaining calm and calling Stanford Dental right away is the best course of action. We can help you determine if your situation requires immediate attention or give you helpful tips over the phone for handling some situations at home.
A tooth that has been knocked out: In this situation, you need to be treated right away in order to have the best chance of saving your tooth. Transport your tooth carefully and try not to touch it too much. Placing it back in its socket is the best option; otherwise, milk can be used to keep the cells moist and alive.
Dental pain or a toothache: If your tooth is causing you constant or severe pain, it may be infected. Dental infections can spread to other teeth, and unfortunately, they will not go away without treatment, so it’s very important for you to call our office for treatment as soon as possible. Root canal therapy may be able to eliminate your infection and save your tooth.
A lost or broken restoration: While we wish they would last forever, dental restorations do have a life span and will break down over time. If you find yourself with a crown or filling that has broken or fallen out, your tooth will need a repair or replacement as soon as possible to avoid further damage or an infection.

A broken tooth: If your tooth is broken, gather the pieces so you can bring them with you to the office. Dr. Carron will recommend the best treatment for you. If your tooth is chipped, it may not require immediate attention, but you should still call us so we can determine the most appropriate course of action. A chip may need to be smoothed in order to prevent irritation to your tongue and other soft tissues.
